Rodger Freeman

WEAVE

About twenty-five people heard Rodger Freeman, the Prevention and Education Supervisor of WEAVE (Women Escaping A Violent Environment). WEAVE has been active in the Sacramento area since 1978 and has provided assistance to women leaving violent husbands or partners. WEAVE has also provided help to victims of sexual violence since 1988. It has over forty paid staff and about two hundred unpaid volunteers. WEAVE has a 24-hour hot line at 916-920-2952.

WEAVE maintains a shelter for battered women in a secure, undisclosed location. Abused women can stay there for up to 60 days and are provided counseling and advice in finding employment. WEAVE now provides services for abused men as well, but in a different facility. Counseling for families with less serious problems is also available, but for a fee. There are other organizations similar to WEAVE nationwide.

During the 1990s HAGSA was active in collecting money and supplies for WEAVE. HAGSA restarted this assistance with a $100 check to WEAVE.
