Marc Adams

The Preacher's Son

Marc AdamsThis was a well-attended and outstanding meeting.

Marc Adams is the author of eight books including his award-winning autobiography, The Preacher’s Son, five collections of poetry, The Do’s and Don’ts of Dealing with the Religious Right, and his latest, It's Not About You.

As he describes in The Preacher’s Son, Marc grew up as the son of a fundamentalist Baptist preacher, who told him that child molestation, HIV contraction, and death were all inevitable results of being gay. One of the most telling clues as to the level of fundamentalism Marc endured as a child is his statement that he decided to go to Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University because he saw it at the time as a liberal alternative to his own family’s doctrine. Marc started his journey to self acceptance at the age of 23.

In an engaging manner, Marc described his journey of self-discovery, denial, estrangement, and finally, advocacy on behalf of others.

Marc is also the founder and executive director of HeartStrong, Inc.  It is the only educational non-profit organization in the world with the mission to provide support and outreach to GLBT students terrorized at religious educational institutions.  The HeartStrong Outreach Team has driven over 327,000 miles in the past nine years.
